5 Days in Jaipur: Journey into the Royal Past and Cultural Charms of the Pink City

If one is on a quest to experience the erstwhile grandeur and royalty of the Indian monarchy and culture, a visit to Jaipur is a must. Acknowledged as the first planned city of India, Jaipur serves as both, the cultural and political capital of Rajasthan. Celebrated for its rich heritage and art, Jaipur homes magnificent structures of architecture, beauty, and splendor that grandly represent the influence and existence of the Hindu as well as Mughal dynasties.

With its stately palaces, massive forts, and sacred temples, Jaipur is such a unique destination that you will feel as if you have traveled back in time, while also witnessing the evolution of India’s indigenous culture.

Jaipur is fondly called ‘The Pink City’. There's an intriguing anecdote regarding this well-known identity. The Prince of Wales visited India in 1876, and because pink is the color of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur had the entire city painted pink to welcome the British. Actually, the city is more terracotta "pink" or peach than pink. It was Lord Albert that declared Jaipur to be a "Pink City," and thus the name.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best season to visit Jaipur is November to January. I visited in February and hence was able to enjoy the trip even more due to less crowd and nice weather. I’d recommend you visit Jaipur during the off-season time, as it tends to get overcrowded.

DURATION OF STAY

You might very well cover all of the tourist attractions in two days, but to truly enjoy the city, you should plan on spending at least six days meandering through its vibrant streets, browsing through the renowned markets, and touring some of Rajasthan's most iconic monuments and forts.

You can get to Dubai via air. As one of the busiest transit hubs, there are numerous flights to and from Dubai, It has two international airports, Al Maktoum International Airport (DXB) and Dubai International Airport (DXB) (DWC). Dubai International Airport is the city's primary airport and one of the biggest in the world. It is located 4 km away southeast of Dubai, whereas Al Maktoum International Airport is 37 km southwest of Dubai.

Traveling Means in the City

Jaipur can be reached via air (Jaipur international airport is approximately 12 km from the city center), train, bus, or even your private vehicle. A train from Delhi will take you only 4 hours to reach Jaipur and via plane, the trip is only 45 minutes long, Within the city, you can explore places through a Tuk-Tuk (petrol rickshaw), Tam-Tam (electric rickshaw), or Taxi for the day. The going rate for a full day (8 hours in a Tuk or Tam) is 500 rupees. A taxi will cost you around 1600 rupees.

Day Wise Journey

 DAY 1

Having landed at the Jaipur International Airport, I headed straight to our hotel, Hotel Sarang Palace. On my way to the hotel, I caught the first glimpse of the lovely city I was about to explore, and its old-world charm captivated me even more. On the day of my arrival, I decided to take it easy and simply wander among the surrounding neighborhoods. The plan was to start exploring the city's urban side first, so around 3 in the afternoon, I stepped inside The Eclectica Cafe. The elegance and peace astounded me. I returned to the hotel and called it a day.

DAY 2

The second day began with an appetizing brunch at the Tapri. Tapri roof-top cafe is located just opposite the lush green Central Park of Jaipur in a very expensive area. The vibe of this place is classic and perfect for an Urban Jaipur feels.

Followed by our visit to the Maharani Market where I witnessed the age-old and the most famous art of Jaipur, block printing. The sight was pleasant as all around me I found vibrant colors and intricate patterns. And once you’re inside a market of this kind, you can’t help but go crazy and buy so many of these beautiful fabrics and items. The next few hours were spent roaming around the market and shopping. The market is also famous for Juttis, camel leather bags, and shoes.

Finally, with my bags full, I realized my stomach was empty and decided to treat myself to a traditional Rajasthani cuisine experience at Choki Dhani. It's mainly a tourist cultural town where you can discover the traditional Rajasthani culture. Here, you can enjoy a variety of entertainment like puppet acts, a demonstration of how chapatis are prepared, camel rides, dancing, fortune-telling, and a cheap bazaar. It was the ideal way to round off my second day.

DAY 3

Jal Mahal, Jaipur, India.

Nahargadh Fort, Jaipur, India. For more travel content follow @shivanis_travelverse

The third day of the trip was devoted entirely to the numerous forts and palaces. Firstly, I visited the Jal Mahal. The Jal Mahal (Water Palace) is a palace located in the heart of Man Sagar Lake. The building has a stunning view of Man Sagar Lake, but because of its isolation from land, it is also the focal point of view from the Man Sagar Dam on the lake's eastern side. The palace, which was originally built as the royal hunting lodge today creates an incredibly tranquil and picturesque sight.

The legendary Nahargarh fort was the next stop. This majestic castle, which overlooks the city, was rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, who was subsequently pacified by the construction of a temple within the fort (thus the name!). Whatever the truth may be, the brilliance of this architectural masterpiece captivated me. From here I enjoyed a beautiful view of the city.

Jaigadh Fort Cannon, Jaipur, India.

Then, I visited the nearby Jaigarh Fort and Amber Fort. Both are prominent tourist attractions on the outskirts of Jaipur. Jaigarh fort, perched on the Aravalli hills, was erected in 1726 AD by Sawan Jai Singh II and boasts panoramic views of the surrounding area. It houses the world's largest cannon on wheels, known as the 'Jaivana Cannon.'

The Jaivana Cannon was only fired once by Jai Singh II, as a test fire in 1720, and the impact is claimed to have been powerful enough to cause a depression where a pond can now be seen. According to legend, pregnant women living nearby miscarried after it was fired. Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Aram Mandir, and the Vilas Mandir are among the other attractions within the fort.

The Amer Fort stands as a testament to the Rajputanas' imperial prowess. The fort, which has towering parapets and multiple artistically constructed arches that give it a dignified aura, is one of several historic monuments included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Indulge in the utmost glory of Indian craftsmanship with this masterpiece, constructed of pale yellow and pink sandstone, and white marble. You can also enjoy an exotic elephant ride here and feel like royalty!

It was time to go back to the city. (These forts are almost 12 km from the city.) I decided to spend the evening at the Wind View Cafe. Facing the iconic Hawa Mahal cafe, I got to enjoy my dinner with a perfect view!

DAY 4

The next day, I craved some regional cuisine and ended up indulging Raj Kachoris' acclaimed Kachoris. As the flavors exploded into my mouth, I felt like swaying. If you come to Jaipur you’ve got to try its street food! Believe me, you won’t be disappointed!

The next visit was Jantar Manter, one of five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. They are designed for naked-eye observation of celestial positions and incorporate various architectural and instrumental advancements. It is no longer a functioning science center, but it is preserved as a monument. Many educational activity sessions, guided tours, music, and light performances are held here.

The next stop was the City Palace, the city's focal point and the heart of the founder Jai Singh II's rule. It houses the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal, as well as several smaller monuments.

DAY 5

On the fifth day, I enjoyed a terrific brunch at the Tattoo Cafe. It, too, had a stunning view of the Hawa Mahal. After brunch, I walked to the Hawa Mahal. This romantic structure, built as a vantage point for the women of the ruling family, is formed of pink sandstone and perfectly embodies the essence of the Pink City.

Having spent the day relaxing, I had a nice dinner at Vidhyadhar Park. The next day, I checked out from the hotel and left Jaipur with a rejuvenated spirit and so many memories to cherish. The entire trip was about witnessing the rich history and indulging in the beauty of Rajasthan and its heartwarming people.

There are a few places that I couldn’t cover on this trip but I recommend that if you have some extra time, you should explore them as well.

  • Galtaji Temple

Stay at Hotel Sarang Palace: Indulge in the Rajasthani Ambiance

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS STAY?

Hotel Sarang Palace is a 3-star luxury boutique located in heart of Jaipur. It is around one km from the Jaipur train station and bus terminal, and approximately ten km from the airport. The hotel is quite nearby to both the old and new city. While Jaipur as a whole has an abundance of costly resorts, Hotel Sarang offers rooms with Rajasthani decor that are not only aesthetically pleasing and sanitary but also suitable for a mid-budget stay.

You can also enjoy stunning rooftop themed dining nights here ( we did not do this as it is kind of too expensive, but you can definitely consider it for celebrating anniversaries or proposals)

Where can we get the best deals for this?

You can have a look at their rooms and packages through their website and can also book through that. I have attached the link below!

Interior : Utilities + Ambience + Cleanliness

If you’re looking for a staying at a luxurious place with a traditional Rajasthani vibe then you should consider Hotel Sarang Palace. The room was kept clean and the ambiance was also relaxing and lively.

Accessibility to city

The best thing about this hotel was probably the easy access to the city. Located at the center of the city, one can easily get cabs and e-rickshaws from the entrance.

Food

The hotel also offers a signature candlelight dinner restaurant, Pakwan. The food here is good. They also offer in-room dining along with an air-conditioned coffee shop cum restaurant at the ground floor level.

The hotel offers staycations and romantic stays. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend work-cations because the wi-fi isn't very reliable here.

Jaipur Food and Culture : Must try Cafes/Restaurants

A city cannot be experienced to its fullest until we indulge in its food and flavors. And a city like Jaipur, brimming with culture and history naturally offers a unique gastronomical experience. From authentic Rajasthani dishes to the most exquisite Italian cuisines, you’ll find it all in this colorful city. The variety here is in such an abundance that you may feel overwhelmed. To help you out, I’ve talked about a few cafes that I visited during my trip and have absolutely fallen in love with their magical ambiance and delectable food.

Place 1: Eclectica Rooftop Cafe

Located on New Sanganer Road, this cafe serves appetizing vegetarian dishes. From North Indian, Italian, Continental, and Chinese to Mexican delicacies, the dishes here are bustling with flavor and aroma.

The rooftop setting is perfect for a brunch date. They have beautifully created a vibrant and refreshing cafe culture and cafe-style fusion food.

Recommended Food: Pav Bhai fondue (which was lit!), Irish Cold Coffee, Dahi Ke Kabab, Bhatoora Bombs, and Hi-tea Mania

Along with good taste, the food presentation was also on-point. And it really enhanced our experience to see our food styled and plated so artistically.

Ambiance: The ambiance is aesthetic and appealing. Especially during the evening, the environment becomes lively and quite magical.

Price range for two people: Rs 1200 to 1500

The setting is suitable for an evening date or treats with friends and family. There are also live counters. However, I'd recommend going for brunch/lunch because the cafe is less packed at this time, and the sensation of a breezy rooftop meal while bathing in the soothing sunshine is just heavenly.

Place 2: Tapri Central Jaipur

Tapri Cafe is a sophisticated tapri. That's exactly what it is. It's akin to a Starbucks version of a tapri. There are a lot of fascinating choices on the menu here. Because everything is digitized here, the entire process is fairly convenient, and the service is also quite swift. The cafe has a lovely rooftop, and I highly recommend having a delicious dinner here at sunset.

Ambiance: The place is basically a luxurious tapri. It faces Central Park Jaipur and has a beautiful environment.

The cafe is also nice for a nice brunch/lunch. However, you can plan a light meal here, since the items on the menu are kind of snaky. But the menu is really creative and will definitely lift your mood up.

You should also visit their ethnic store, which is located on the second floor. The shop sells delightful organic presents as well as aesthetically pleasing tapri vibed products.

Place 3: Choki Dhani

Choki Dhani will provide you with an authentic Rajasthani experience. The place is a blend of Rajasthan's cultural, traditional, and historical flavors.

Price Range for 2: Rs 1800 (Expensive but trust me, it’s worth it!)

The restaurant is suitable for brunch, lunch, and even dinner. I recommend that you arrive a little early, around 6 p.m., and enjoy all of these attractions for 3 hours.

Place 4: Tattoo Cafe

The cafe offers a classical Jaipur view. Located right across the iconic Hawa Mahal, the cafe is a must-visit. The place gets a bit crowded, but the entire setting is worth experiencing. It’s a rooftop outdoor cafe with great food.

Visit for brunch/lunch because the experience is enjoyable and intimate at this time. The sight of the Hawa Mahal in the sparkling sunbeams is not to be missed. During dinner, though, the place gets jam-packed and it is challenging to even find a seat.

Place 5: Once Upon A Time At Bagh

On our last day in Jaipur, I wanted to do something special for my partner. Hence, I researched and discovered this gorgeous gem. Beautifully landscaped Vidhyadhar ji ka Bagh, built by the chief architect of the historical city of Jaipur- Vidhyadhar Bhattacharya. He is renowned for some of history's most well-planned cities.

Recommended Food: North Indian, Mughal, and beverages

Ambiance: The setting is divine, especially for a candlelight dinner. Everything is magnificent, from the architecture to the music to even the entrance door to the restroom. The outside location is pleasant. The indoor setting is also very lovely, particularly the Neela Mahal.

The location is best enjoyed at sunset. First, soak in the grandeur of this place amidst hills, and then get ready for a heavenly candlelight dinner.
